WBX Meat Wagon

Location: 2401 NE Argyle
Hours: Mon-Fri, 7am-1:30pm

The Story: Most food carts are born of a long simmering desire or skill. Some concieved based on family recipes or traditions. And then there are the carts created to build and promote a brand. WBX Meat Wagon is the work of Western Boxed Meats and feeds the many in and around the industrial area of NE Portland.

Over the years, numerous corporations have utilized the food cart or food truck model to promote the brand or build customer loyalty. A few years back, the State of Wyoming parked a food truck in Pioneer Courthouse Square to give out “Buffalo Chips,” heavy chocolate chunk cookies. Come to Wyoming, see buffalo. The WBX Meat Wagon is a full service food cart and kitchen dishing up everything from salads to pasta dishes, sandwiches and burgers. The purpose here isn’t just the food, but to showcase the brands that the company Western Boxed Meats works with. Why not? You never know who your customer may be.

Double Bypass at WBX Meat Wagon

Since the cart is named the Meat Wagon, I ordered the Double Bypass Burger. Honestly, I misread the menu and didn’t realize I had just ordered 2 1/2lb burgers with bacon and cheese. Holy crap that’s a big burger. But at $7, I just halved it and, boom, lunch and dinner. Juicy, cheesy, bacony. Everything one needs for a solid lunch.

WBX Meat Wagon offers up a great option for breakfast and lunch for industrial NE along with turning the food cart model around to promote Western Boxed Meats’ products. A win-win for all. Next time you’re up that way, stop on by and let them know Food Carts Portland sent ya.

Burger Stevens in Hillsdale

Location: 6238 SW Capitol Hwy in Hillsdale
Hours: Daily and Weekends 11am-7pm

The Story: Everyone loves a good simple burger right? Portland loves burgers so much they dedicate an entire week to celebrate the meat and bun magic. Burger Stevens opened last year and serves up one of the city’s best burgers from a food cart.

Burgers don’t need three patties and foie gras. Burgers should be crafted with a solid toasted bun, condiments, a grilled beef patty and cheese. Adding bacon and vegetables like lettuce, tomato and pickles adds to the experience. Burger Stevens creates a simple, yet delectable burger the likes many restaurants in town have lost sight of. Don Salamone launched the food cart in 2015 to showcase simple burgers with simple ingredients at the right price. An example is the bun. Many burgers in town showcase an artisanal bun which sometimes works, but often doesn’t. Don chose the simple locally made Franz bun we all grew up with.

The burger may seem small to those of us watching the ongoing arms race of doubles, triples and 1/2lb Kobe burgers that dot the scene. Yet that is what perfection is. The grilled patty gets the perfect char and melted cheese then topped with lettuce, tomato and pickles. I added on fresh grilled jalapeños to up the ante and wasn’t disappointed. The bun won me over, holding everything together and offering a bit of toasted butter tastiness to the entire sandwich. Oh, and isn’t that a cute burger?

Burger Stevens is located in Hillsdale in the SW Hills of Portland next to Wilson High School. In a lot that hosts four food carts and covered seating, Don put together the ideal menu for the neighborhood. Next time you’re in the area, drop on by for a burger and maybe some soft serve and let them know Food Carts Portland sent ya.

Burger Food Cart Portland

Smak Dab’s

Location: NE 52nd and Sandy – Rose City Food Park
Hours: Tues-Sat, 11-7; Sun, 12-5

The Story: When you have a dream, sometimes nothing can stop you. Chris had the dream to open a food cart for over 15 years and now Smak Dab’s has launched with their gourmet stuffed burgers.

Chris has a background in the restaurant industry having worked for more than a few large restaurants over the years. The food cart scene just wasn’t as vibrant in the first part of the last decade, so Chris put the plans on hold, but kept the dream alive. The cart, located on NE MLK at The Fusion food cart pod is one of a few who have opened thee in the past six months. That pod has always housed food carts offering a range of cuisines ever since I moved into the neighborhood almost 17 years ago. Now, with a formal name, a covered deck and a quorum of vendors, I think NE MLK has a viable street food scene.

Tres Hombres from Smak Dab’s

Smak Dab’s focuses on stuffed burgers. Many call them the Juicy Lucy after a famous midwestern chain. Chris has his own twist. The patty includes bread crumbs among other goodies to add some cohesion as he forms it around the ingredients. The surprises are inside. Take The Calzone for example – pepperoni, mozzarela cheese and marinara all grilled inside the patty. Just imagining that first bite elicits a stomach growl. The Tres Hombres was for me – jalapenos, olives, jack cheese inside with quacamole atop. At first site, I thought maybe the burger was a bit burned, yet that first bite countered the visual. The patty, with the extra ingredients comes with caramelization throughout – a sweet, salty and for the Tres Hombres, spicy delight. Fresh lettuce and tomato create a cool tasty friction to the stuffed burger. Overall, a well done sammy.

Smak Dab’s has an impressive menu with six stuffed burger options. The day I visited, Chris also had pulled pork on the menu. Design your own if you want, he’ll make it happen. There is plenty of covered seating on site and they offer vegetarian options and GF buns. Drop on by and let them know Food Carts Portland sent ya.

Earth Burgers

Location: SE 28th Pl and Division – Tidbit
Hours: Wed-Sun, 12-3pm, 5:30-8:30pm

The Story: Portland restaurants offer up some of the best burgers and even dedicate an entire week to them. At Earth Burgers, a food cart at Tidbit, they offer up tasty vegetarian and vegan options for burger lovers who don’t want to eat meat.

Earth Burgers opened earlier this year and moved to the Tidbit lot in August. Owners Diane and Stan came to Portland to launch their business after attending the ROAM Mobile Food Conference in 2013. Diane is a graduate of the New York French Culinary Institute and worked in a number of New York establishments to create a stellar resume and understand food and the complexity of flavors. The two of them put together an idea and ran with it, launching Earth Burgers focusing on healthy vegetarian and vegan burgers.

PDmeX Veggie Burger

At Earth Burgers, the burgers are handmade with black beans and garbanzo beans from Washington’s Haricot Farms. Grains and flours are from Bob’s Red Mill. All mixed greens and spices are organic. See the theme? They offer Gluten Free buns from Happy Campers in Tigard. The American Graffiti first piqued my interest with a black bean and sweet potato burger,  mixed greens, onion, ketchup and mustard. Just what a burger should be. Then I spied the PDmeX which added pickled jalapenos and a tomatillo-avocado salsa. Mix in spice with any burger and I’m sold. The PDmeX started off with great flavors in the burger and bun with the spice from the jalapenos coming in around the halfway mark. Whew, it spiced it up in a good way. What I loved about the handmade patty was it didn’t mush up and fall apart like some veggie burgers. The bun and burger stayed together till the last bite. Looking forward to a return trip to try one of the chickpea burgers.

Earth Burgers is a great addition to our overall burger scene here in the city. At Tidbit they have found a home in one of Portland’s most welcoming spots. Drop on by when you’re craving something new and let Diane and Stan know Food Carts Portland sent ya.

  • The Casbah – chickpea burger, cucumbers, tomato, pickled red onions, organic mixed greens, tahini sauce – $8
  • Electric Sitar – potato and vegetable burger, caramelized onions, cilantro chutney, organic mixed greens, masala sauce – $8
  • PDmeX – $8.50
  • Beautiful South – black-eyed pea burger, vinegar based coleslaw, organic mixed greens, bbq sauce – $7.50
