The Story:

One thing Portland’s food cart scene is lacking is great British food. The owners of London Pasty Company saw that and decided to sate the need.

London Pasty Company is the work of Jane Hayes, a born and raised Brit who has lived here in the NW for the past 7 years. Jane has been looking for her favorite dish – the pasty – for years and couldn’t find one anywhere so she decided she needed to be the one to bring it to Portland. In her cart, with some help from mom, she makes fresh pasties and sausage rolls daily. If you don’t know, a pasty is a traditional British hand pie made with meat and potatoes or veggies and cheese. Great for a meal or a snack between a couple of people.

While the traditional pasty is meat and potatoes made with round steak and seasoning, potato, carrots, onion and sweetcorn baked in a golden shortcrust pastry, I opted for the cheese and onion made with grated Tillamook cheddar cheese and blended with fluffy golden potatoes and onions and baked in the shortcrust pastry. Split it in half and steam rises out, but it isn’t too hot to eat right then. You can taste the onion and the cheddar cheese come through along with the potatoes and on a cool spring day, it is a great hearty dish.

London Pasty Company is open at Cartlandia and Jane or her mom are there to greet you and feed you their handmade pies. Beyond the pasties, check out their sausage rolls and soon, dessert pasties. Open for lunch and early dinner, swing on by and let them know Food Carts Portland sent ya.

  2. Carol Otis says

The pasties are great and my favorite is the cheese and onion. Jane makes everything from scratch. But my favorite is her homemade scones, local strawberries and freshly whipped cream for afternoon tea!

  3. Ivan Schuening says

We eat the pastys for breakfast lunch, and dinner. The variety is pretty tasty.

Update: Today (Sunday 10 July) We will be CLOSED to install AIR CONDITIONING for the first time! It will be good for the ladies and for the pasty dough as well! LadyJane says that pasty baking and construction sawdust just don’t mix!!!!

When did they start using New World corn in pasties?

  7. Hi Jane and Dorothy, sounds like you are both doing a great job! will be over from the UK soon to check out those pastys!

    Lots of Love, Beverley xx

  8. Although it sounds good the “Traditional” pasty offered is no such thing. Traditional pasty is meat, potatoes, onion and sweed (rutabega) that’s it, no carrot and no corn.

  9. Mary Smith says

Hi Jane…that was fun chatting with you this lunch time. It’s great to find a real Pasty! I loved the Cheese Pasty that I had and Mike was impressed with the Taditional Pasty. We’ll be back and bring with us the Corrie DVDs:)

  10. Do you know of any place in the Bay Area(San Francisco/San Jose/Oakland) who would have those British meat pies????

  11. London pasty company and Pi woodfired pizza are long gone. We have 28 carts now and they are all listed on the web page for easy access and referral. It must be quite a job to keep up with all the roaming ! Thanks for all that you do !!
