The Story:

It is hard to miss the cute little cart over in the corner of the lot with the huge motif of what I can only describe as a monster with his mouth open ready to eat you. The mascot and logo design pull you toward the OmNomNom cart for some great sandwiches.

Om nom nom is one of those phrases we say often when we want to describe an eating experience or possibly an eatgasm. The Cookie Monster introduced my generation to the onomatopoeia and whenever I’m emptying the cookie jar, I too blurt out “om nom nom” in a semi-guttural voice. The cart is the work of Katie and Karl who work in tandem making the scrumptious sandwiches you’ll enjoy.

Portabello Sandwich

Portabello Sandwich

Take some focaccia, throw two halves on the grill to warm up and get a bit of crust. Add portabella mushrooms to the mix and once grilled, place them on the focaccia with a spread of chevre, some butter lettuce, sliced onions and tomatoes and some roasted red peppers and you have an excellent sandwich. The texture of the portabella, chewy and thick, makes us omnivores think we’re eating some sort of meat. The chevre was a perfect match for this sandwich, used as a spread with the onions and lettuce as bright fresh crisp flavors to compliment the earthiness of the mushroom. A sandwich made with care and great ingredients.

The day we visited, it was cold and wet, yet we were able to enjoy the sandwich in the lot’s covered seating area replete with heat and walls to protect against the wind. They even show movies there sometimes. OmNomNom Sandwiches offers four hot sandwiches, a small menu, but rich with flavors and choices. Katie and Carl were welcoming and enjoyable to chat with. Next time you’re looking or lunch or dinner in southeast Portland, drop on by A la Carts and let them know Food Carts Portland sent ya.
