Description: Coney Island Hot Dogs!
Hot dogs are such a varied regional food. And trust me, people get a bit passionate and territorial about how a “proper” dog should be made and what kind of condiments should be served with it. There’s Chicago style with its multiple condiments and distinctive bright green “nuclear relish.” Kansas dogs come with melted Swiss cheese and sauerkraut. Carolina dogs are served covered in chili, mustard, onions AND coleslaw. Not to be outdone, Norwalk, Connecticut has “split dogs” which are deep fried after being boiled. Arizona even has the Southwestern inspired “Perro Caliente”, which is basically a flour tortilla wrapped hot dog burrito, with refried beans, salsa and rice. I grew up in a city where spicy “Polish” dogs reign supreme, and are served with loads of kraut and the distinctive and regional Stadium brand brown mustard. The list goes on.
Then there is the exhaustive chili dog variations found all over our great land. Los Angeles might try to claim the chili dog as America’s number one hot dog, but it’s really the Coney Island dog that rules the chili dog style (I bet I’ll get hate mail because I just said that). However, as New York might claim it, it turns out someone in Michigan actually invented it. Go figure. Regardless, Coney Island dog lovers are a particular breed – the bun must be a certain way, the preferred choice of meat is often the famous Nathan’s brand, the chili is always beanless, and the toppings are usually just chopped onion and yellow mustard. However, you can pretty much get a Coney any way you want. For a Coney Dog is the most American of dogs – we are a free country after all, filled with free thinking individuals and we are free to choose what condiments we want on our hot dogs! God Bless America!

How does their chili rate? I’ve been craving a Coney. Their dogs look good and sloppy.
