Tita's Pista

***CLOSED MAY 2009***

Location: 4233 North Mississippi  Ave. near North Skidmore Street.

Description: The only cart in Portland that I know of to get a Filipino soul food fix. Located on a large lot just north of the hustle and bustle of the N. Mississippi strip, this little brown wood clad trailer compound is also more reminiscent of a charming out of the way beach shack than an inner city food cart. With a scattering of wooden lounge chairs, a picnic table, and potted bamboo, Tita’s is a fun little lunch or afternoon snack escape. The only things missing are the hammocks, palm trees and gentle sound of crashing waves in the distance.

Abobo chicken, Pancit plate with Bat Meat, Lumpia and Guava Juice at Tita

Food offerings include wonderfully aromatic and fork tender Adobo Chicken served with rice, soy sauce seasoned Pancit rice noodles with vegetables (vegan), a variety of different Lumpia spring rolls and even Monkey Meat (marinated pork skewers) or Bat Meat (marinated chuck roast skewers). Sinigang soup made with pork, potatoes, onions and bok choy is made with a tangy tamarind base surely a terrific cold weather remedy, while the wasabi slaw is extremely refreshing and made with red and green cabbage, carrots, bean sprouts and sesame all served in a creamy vegan dressing.

The condiment table is generous and a great way to add a personal kick to your meal.  Featuring a variety of well known and lesser known sauces and toppings like fish sauce, and a plethora of chili sauces and soy sauces, I’m glad to see my personal favorite represented, the Filipino ketchup known as banana sauce.

Desserts rotate according to season and whim, but often feature fresh mango or papaya swimming in a creamy sweet coconut milk sauce, while tropical ice cream flavors such as Lychee are sometimes available in the warmer months.  For a traditional treat, try the Ube rice pudding made with soy/almond milk and purple yam (ube) topped with chopped nuts and coconut.

Hours seem to change rather frequently at this cart, so if you are coming from a distance you might want to call ahead first.
