Hours: lunchtime, Mon-Fri

The Story:

Took a field trip north to visit a new food truck roaming the streets of Vancouver. Serving up tasty rice and bean bowls, The Mighty Bowl has captured the eater’s hearts as displayed by the line at 1pm.

The Mighty Bowl is the first food truck to roam the streets of Vancouver, a city that has not followed Portland’s model of food carts and is known for some challenging regulations. Owner Steve Valenta, his wife, Sherilee, and their longtime friend, Kevin DeGraw banded together to design and build one good looking truck and work through the city’s regulations. With the simple idea of healthy rice and bean bowls, they’ve been serving regularly at multiple locations since spring.

Rice bowls for me date back a decade or more. Over the years, I’ve eaten my share of bowls and keep coming back. At The Mighty Bowl, there are different options to add dynamic flavor, but the dish is simply brown rice, black beans, cheddar cheese, olives, salsa, avocado, sour cream, cilantro and sauce. If you do all those single ingredients well with a killer sauce, you create an awesomely healthy dish. The Kiggins bowl comes with spicy chipotle sauce generously distributed throughout so you don’t spill trying to mix it all together. While there was spice to the sauce, the smokiness of the chipotle was the most memorable. Every bite, every spoonful included at least four of the ingredients making the entire meal an enjoyable eating event. All dishes are gluten free and some are nut and egg free in addition.

The Mighty Bowl is one of those food trucks you see on TV with an amazing wrap presenting their logo. Downtown Vancouver isn’t that large, so if you’re driving around, you may happen upon them one day. Or, if you want to seek them out, they post their daily schedule on their website – TheMightyBowl.com. If you live and work in Vancouver, you should venture out and enjoy one of their bowls or wraps. If you’re in Portland, take a field trip north, it isn’t too far away. Let them know Food Carts Portland sent ya.

Pirate Fish and Chips

Location: 1137 Tucker Rd, Hood River, OR
Hours: Mon-Fri, 10-4pm

The Story:

Every so often I get the itch to leave the city and see where the car will take me and hope that I’ll find something awesome to eat when I get to wherever I’m going. A few weeks ago, that itch and a Zipcar took me to Hood River where my friend and I enjoyed some of what Pirate Fish and Chips has to offer.

Hood River, a gem in the middle of the Columbia Gorge, is one of those cities I have visited more times than I can count. As a kid we would stop there for ice cream or Pizza at Pietro’s on our way to camp on the Washington side of the Columbia up by Goldendale. Since then, Hood River became the wind-surfing capital of the world and turned into one awesome little town. These days, while there are amazing outdoor activities available, I visit for the breweries and the food. Like many small towns, Hood River now has some food carts that are making inroads and Pirate Fish and Chips is one of them.

Inasal Filipino BBQ

Inasal Filipino BBQ

Location: 9525 SW Beaverton Hillsdale Hwy
Hours: Mon-Fri, 11am-8pm; Sat, 12-5pm

The Story:

Driving down Division street, you can’t miss the sunset orange 70’s era RV parked at the corner of SE 48th and Division. It screams “VISIT ME.” So I did and enjoyed a nice lunch from Inasal Filipino BBQ.

Inasal is the latest cart to take over the corner spot of the D-48 food cart pod. Upon arrival, you’re greeted by a couple of BBQ grills working their magic with chicken and pork. The dishes at Inasal, most served with a side of rice and steamed vegetables, include Sesame Beef, Orange Chicken, BBQ Pork Skewers and what I enjoyed, the Insasal Chicken. While looking over the choices, the robust owner and chef leaned out the window and heartily recommended it, stating he ate it every day when he was living in the Philippines. Breasts of chicken marinated in a unique blend of spices and then grilled, yet what makes it special is the basting sauce that is unique to the region. I understand there are whole chains of restaurants that focus solely on Inasal chicken dishes in the Philippines. Served with bright white rice and a salty dipping sauce, the chicken was moist and flavorful with hints of ginger and lemongrass and even a sweetness as if a sugary drink was used in the marinade. Researching recipes tells me they sometimes use lemon soda in the marinade. The dipping sauce paired well with the chicken and rice, adding a saltiness that wasn’t over the top, but just right.

Inasal Filipino BBQ is open daily for lunch and into the evening for dinner. While there, they did a brisk business of the BBQ pork skewers, so obviously the neighborhood loves pork on a stick. Drop on by and check them out and let them know Food Carts Portland.

Sample Menu:

  • Inasal Chicken – BBQ chicken with dipping sauce and rice – $7
  • Orange Chicken – breaded chicken with rice and orange sauce – $7
  • Sesame Beef – sliced beef with veggies and rice – $7
  • BBQ Pork Skewer – with rice – $7
  • Bihun Speicla – Filipino noodles with rice, chicken, 2 lumpia and a pork skewer – $10
  • Sinigan na Baboy – pork soup with veggies – $8

The Steak Shack

Location: 10966 SE McLoughlin, Milwaukie
Hours: Mon-Fri, 11-5

The Story:

Milwaukie is excited for their first cart and so are the boaters and fisherman who make Milwaukie their starting point. The Steak Shack has opened right in downtown.

Dave and Chip opened the cart after working with the city to figure out what was needed. Being Milwaukie’s first, it took some partnership between the parties to understand the rules and get the cart open and Dave is elated. Dave hails from Toronto where he lived and worked for many years until he was brought to Portland with his wife’s work. While standing in line at Costco, he met Chip who is a trained chef and the relationship blossomed from there. Buy a cart, design a menu, open and feed the masses.

Ribeye Steak Sandwich from The Steak Shack

Ribeye Steak Sandwich from The Steak Shack

The cart is outfitted with a charbroiler with which they grill the ribeye steaks for the sandwiches. Dave couldn’t find a good steak sandwich in the area, so that is what inspired his menu. The ribeye is the perfect cut for this type of sandwich and they grilled it to perfection. We ordered it with every topping they had, so it was a bit messy, but sometimes you have to get dirty to enjoy a meal. They also serves burgers, grilled chicken and hot dogs.

The cart is located in the 76 station on the east side of McLoughlin directly across from the boat launch and park. A great location once the weather warm up and everyone comes down to enjoy the river. I’m looking forward to hearing about Dave’s plans to serve the boaters. If you’re down that way, drop on by. Dave and Chip are great to chat with and cook up some great sandwiches. Let them know Food Carts Portland sent ya.

Sample Menu:

  • Ribeye Steak on a Bun – $7
  • Homemade Burger – $5.50
  • Grilled Chicken on a Bun – $6
  • Jumbo Hot Dog – $4
  • Handcut Fries – $2
  • Onion Rings – $2.50
