Location: N Mississippi and Skidmore, Mississippi Marketplace
Hours: Tues-Thurs, 10am-3pm; Fri/Sat, 9am-4pm

The Story:

Miss Kate, Charles’ grandmother, was from Vicksburg, Mississippi and Charles, the owner of the newest cart in Mississippi Marketplace is bringing the tastes of Mississippi to the street.

When Kate passed, Charles’ took control of the hundreds of recipes that Miss Kate had collected over the years from her time with the ladies at bridge and garden clubs. They would sit around and simply write down their favorites on the bridge pads, so some of the recipes don’t have titles. Charles takes the recipe and puts the ingredients together without truly knowing what the outcome will be. These are true southern dishes made by a descendant of the founders of Vicksburg. Charles loves to cook and it was at the cajoling for friends that he opened the cart. He also loves to tell stories – did you know the first bottle of Coke was made in Vicksburg by the Biedenharn Candy Company in 1894?

At Miss Kate’s Southern Kitchen, you can discover some amazing southern dishes like coleslaw, mac and cheese, succotash, chicken salad, meatloaf, turkey, pork roast, biscuits and gravy and their awesome pimento cheese. They also have southern fried chicken with biscuits which is what I enjoyed that opening week. I didn’t grow up with crispy homemade fried chicken, so as an adult, I’ve been seeking it out whenever I can. With just salt, pepper and flour, Charles creates an amazing crust that keeps the meat juicy and savory. The biscuits that come with the meal are something special. Sweet cream butter was a dominant taste in the biscuit, but the secret is actually a brown sugar/butter glaze that creates the sweetness I so loved. I’m excited to have Mississippi food now on Mississippi boulevard in my neighborhood.

Charles and his cart Miss Kate’s Southern Kitchen are open Tuesday through Saturday for the morning hours through the afternoon. You can enjoy some biscuits and gravy or grab a full meal. Charles has an extensive menu, so you can try all that he has to offer. I’m looking forward to some southern succotash.
Location: 3503 N Mississippi, north of Fremont
Hours: Mon-Sat, 12-9pm, Sun, 12-5pm

The Story:

Mississippi avenue is bookended by food carts with venerable elder statesmen FlavourSpot at one end and Mississippi Marketplace on the other. In between, just north of Fremont, a pod has struggled to take shape and keep carts. A new cart, Grass Roots Cafe looks to be one that will be there for awhile.

Grass Roots Cafe is the work of Ellis and his partner who opened the cart earlier this year. While Ellis attended culinary school at Clark College, looking at the menu and chatting with him, the flavors and feeling of the cart have been sitting in his culinary mind for years. Sandwiches, burgers, sliders, mac and cheese – and wings. Yes, chicken wings. We have had a few carts in town doing wings, but at this time, none are open, so if you want wings from a cart, Grass Roots Cafe is your place.

Upon arrival, Ellis was there, leaning out the window welcoming me and telling me about the specials. I was intrigued by the Charles Bronson Chili, but was more in the mood for a sandwich. He offers the “Bro that’s stupid hot” Chicken burger with grilled chicken, chipotle mayo, sliced jalapenos, insane heat sauce, lettuce and tomato. It even has a note that a waiver must be signed. I enjoy spice, so ordered it. Ellis started looking for the waiver. Seriously! I stopped him. I thought it was a joke, but it wasn’t. The sauce is made with habaneros and ghost peppers, some of the hottest on the planet. While I wanted a spicy sandwich, I opted to not include the insane heat sauce and Ellis served the sandwich up with a spicy BBQ sauce instead. The grilled chicken had a wonderful spice rub on it and paired with the chipotle mayo and jalapenos it was enough flavor and spice for my palate. A wonderful mix of flavors.

"Bro that's stupid hot" chicken sandwich

I love it that he has waivers for his hot sauce. That tells me he is proud of the heat. If you’re a heat fan, you should check it out and report back. I know I’ll be returning to try out the chicken wings – maybe on Monday nights when they are only 50c a piece. Drop on by Grass Roots Cafe, say hi to Ellis and try some of his vittles. They have covered seating and he’s open into the evening. Let him know Food Carts Portland sent ya.

Sample Menu:

Location: Cartlandia, SE 82nd and Harney
Hours: Mon-Thurs, 8am-4pm; Fri, 8am-6pm; Sat, 11am-6pm

The Story:

I saw the logo first and my mouth began to water. blt. I immediately had that memory from childhood of stacking bacon and lettuce on toasted bread (no tomato, I didn’t like tomatoes then) with plenty of mayo and taking that wonderful first bite. Breakfast Lunch Today, or otherwise known as blt is a sandwich shop at Cartlandia.

Etienne Saucier opened his cart in summer and moved to the Cartlandia pod in August. Originally, he had planned a large menu of diverse items, but reality set in and he realized he wouldn’t have a large cart to support such efforts. In the trailer he did outfit, he designed a menu that would work with the confined space. After a few months, he’s happy with his choice and has succeeded.

Montecristo from Breakfast Lunch Today

Etienne focuses on sandwiches and has a broad selection to choose from including fried sandwiches, cold sandwiches and classics like the Dagwood and Croque-Monsieur. I was ready to go for the namesake and get a BLT, but asked him for his recommendation and he steered me to the Fried Montecristo. I’ve had the pleasure of enjoying a few variations on the Montecristo – usually a deep fried traditional sandwich with powdered sugar atop. When we opened up Etienne’s version I was completely surprised. Instead of a traditional sandwich with slices of bread, his Montecristo is made up of black forest ham, turkey, Gruyere and emmental cheese then wrapped in beignet dough and deep fried. Beignet Dough! I just stared at it for a minute not sure what to think, but took the first bite and tasted the sweetness of the dough mixed with the excellent choice of cheese and meats. So good. We even tasted a bit of wine in there, but Etienne explained that beignet dough is over yeasty which brings out those types of flavors and smells. A great twist on an already wonderfully decadent sandwich.

Etienne and his cart are open during the week and on Saturday for breakfast, lunch and on Friday and Saturday, you could pick something up for an early dinner. If you’re in the mood for a well crafted sammy, drop on by Breakfast Lunch Today and let them know Food Carts Portland sent ya.

The Story:

In a trailer that reminds one of the 50′s or maybe a boardwalk vendor, The Rock House Grill creates some great food to sate your needs- morning, noon or night.

At Cartlandia out in east Portland, James has opened his shop after years of working in restaurants and honing his skills at the grill. He’s worked in small bars, been a line cook and even catered for concerts. If you can manage a crowd of rowdy rockers, you’ve proven you can man the grill.

NY Steak Sandwich

With an extensive menu of breakfast items, sandwiches, burgers, burritos, pork chops and steaks, there is something for everyone. Instead of ordering what I would normally order, the burger, we asked James what his signature dish was. The NY Steak sandwich is what he prepared. Ordered medium rare, just before we went to sit down, he yelled out the window “leave the fat on or off?” I’ve never been asked that, so again, deferred to his discretion – fat on. The large steak came atop some melted cheese on a toasted bun with some grilled onions and peppers sliced tomato and a salad mix of finely chopped cilantro, spinach and leaf lettuce. At first bite, you could taste the amazing steak, cooked perfectly medium rare and juicy, the veggies and a hint of horseradish that was pleasantly spicy, but not overwhelming. Having the fat left on gave it a great little buttery flavor. An excellent sandwich and one of the best I’ve tried in awhile.

The Rock House Grill is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and will feed you until you’re full. The portions are large and satisfying and James is a character who will bring your food to the table and make sure you’ve had a satisfying meal. Drop on by and let him know Food Carts Portland sent ya.

Sample Menu: by far not everything

The Big Badass American Outlaw Burrito: steak, chicken or pork with all the fixins – $8

NY Steak and Eggs w/hash browns or fried potatoes and toast – $10

The Story:

Pasta and cheese go hand in hand. There should be a bumper sticker about it. Herb’s Mac & Cheese opened to focus on that combination and add their own taste combinations.

I’m a child of mac & cheese. Seriously. I loved it and ate it whenever I could. I even remember making a batch for dinner but burning the butter before adding the cheese powder. My parents were so nice, they ate it anyways. As I grew older, the boxed goods I grew up on bored me. It was then a friend introduced me to home-made mac & cheese and I was hooked. Taking pasta and different types of cheese and layering it together with extra ingredients and then baking it is probably one of the best dishes out there. I was excited to see Herb’s Mac & Cheese open and offer up dishes that go beyond the standard macaroni and cheese.

Herb's Mac & Cheese

At Herb’s you can get traditional mac & cheese made with penne macaroni and his signature Mornay sauce. Herb’s starts with white sauce at its base and then mixes in his own secret combination of no less than 4 different cheeses. You can get the traditional dish or create your own with ingredients that include chicken, pepperoni, bacon, garlic, jalapenos, tomatoes, and more. Add extra cheese with choices ranging from blue cheese crumbles to pepper jack to Asiago. If you don’t think you can create your own, Herb will always have a couple of specials for you to choose from. We opted for the Micro-Raptor, a daily special with bacon, tomatoes, garlic, blue cheese and topped with Frank’s Red Hot Sauce. I added in jalapenos to give it a little more kick. With two size options, the small was enough for two people to share, so if you opt for the large, be prepared. The pasta a large tube style penne captured all the creamyness of the sauce much better than old style macaroni does. The jalapenos and hot sauce gave the entire dish the spice we love with flavoring and not just heat. I had eaten throughout the day and didn’t think I was hungry, but it was so tasty I devoured it right there, event getting in a bit of trouble for eating more than my share.

Herb’s Mac & Cheese offers up a childhood favorite with some artistry in one of the most unique shaped carts seen to date. If you’re a pasta and cheese fan, you need to visit and enjoy what Herb has to offer. Let them know Food Carts Portland sent ya.

The Story:

We did a couple of roadtrips across America in the past few years and some of the best food we enjoyed was in the south. A mixture of down home cookin’ and a grandmotherly service makes you want to stick around and chat about old times. Wooster’s had all those traits and more.

Matt and Spencer make up the team that brought Wooster’s to Portland. When I say brought, I mean it. The bright orange cart was acquired and outfitted in Florida and then driven to Portland. The original goal was to hit some festivals along the way, but as they learned, the rules are different in every city, state and county, so ended up just coming straight here to open. Both Matt and Spencer are from Texas and met here in Portland at Le Cordon Bleu, the culinary school. With those southern influences, a few recipes from grandma and some time spent in Alabama, the menu and flavors of Wooster’s were born. They like to call it an original country soul food style.

Fried Green BLT from Wooster's

Wooster’s is open from breakfast to dinner and even late night on the weekends, so their menu reflects all kinds of options one would enjoy during the course of the day. You could start off with biscuits and gravy, have a chicken salad sandwich for lunch, shrimp and grits for dinner and they even have desserts and fried goods for that late night craving. Being there for lunch, we tried the fried green BLT with a side of fried whole okra. The BLT was just that with thick slabbed bacon and leaf lettuce, but substitute in fried green tomatoes. The bread for the sandwich was toasted just right to provide a crunch without forcing you to chew your way to the goodies inside. The fried green tomatoes (which we also got as a side dish) had an amazing batter to them which added an exceptional twist to this southern favorite. The whole fried okra were delectable. Using the same batter, which had a cornmeal element, the okra were cooked just right so as to not have that slimy texture so many simply can’t stomach. The true star with both fried items was the crust created by the batter. You gotta try it.

Fried Okra from Wooster's

Wooster’s is hard to miss. A bright orange trailer right on Foster just east of 52nd. Matt and Spencer are Texas gentleman and welcome you with a smile and a hearty southern “hello.” I’m excited to get back to try some of their other menu items – especially the country fried steak. Head on down, get a bit out of the south in your belly and let them know Food Carts Portland sent ya.

The Story:

I actually remember the first time I had tater tots. We were a meat and potatoes and pancakes for dinner family living in deep southeast Portland when my mom came home one evening with this bag of Ore-Ida Tater Tots. When the cookie sheet came out of the oven and those tots were up for grabs, my brother, sister and I dove in. It was the best food we had tasted in our entire lives (I actually remember us exclaiming that while running through the house, screaming.) Now, some 30 odd years later, Tots are making a serious comeback as both comfort food and treats at high end restaurants. When we wrote about a cart serving tots as a side for burgers last year, the Internets blew up with comments. Now, we have a cart that takes tots to the next level – The Dog House PDX.

Timber from The Dog House PDX

Timber and Ali, who brought us Yogio last year, knew that their pod in North Portland needed a comfort food cart, so they acquired a stepvan and converted it to serve up dogs and tots and everything in between. When I first heard of the cart, I thought they were just doing a variation on a hot dog cart, but their approach is to put together unique bowls of happy food funtime. You can either have a dog or tots which are then covered with your choice of topping and usually melted cheese. The dog or tots are called the bottom and tops could include gravy, bacon, a fried egg, jalapenos, black beans, chili, pineapple or pretty much anything you can imagine. A great concept that includes what many of us grew up on as children with the tastes we’ve learned to love over the years.

I highly suggest eating whatever you order at the lot instead of getting it to go. Why? Because they serve whatever you order in a great little dog dish and that is just cool. Picture a pile of tots covered with melted pepper jack cheese, onions, jalapenos and topped with a fried egg. Oh and don’t forget the kicker sauce which adds a little spice to the entire dish. Every bit of the dish captures the essences of childhood with the crispiness of the tots and the gooeyness of the melted cheese. While I don’t remember mom ever putting a fried egg on my tots, it worked. I felt like a kid again.

I wasn’t able to visit The Dog House when they first opened at North Station in north Portland. They moved last month to NE Alberta with Yogio to their own pod named Holy Trinity partnering with another cart that sells vintage clothing. I’m so happy to have finally enjoyed some of Timber’s tots and her excellent creations. I can only imagine they sell a boat load of tots once the sun goes down and the bars open up. Drop on by The Dog House, enjoy some tots, relive a childhood memory and let them know Food Carts Portland sent ya.

Sample Menu:

Each dish starts with a bottom of either a hot dog, Tater Tots or Fritos – $5.50

Rip City: pepper jack cheese, onions, jalapenos, kicker sauce, topped with a fried egg

Trouble in Paradise: bacon, pineapple, pepper jack cheese, kicker sauce, onions

Heartbreak Hotel: bacon, cheddar cheese, ketchup, onions, topped with fried egg

The Big D: house chili, cheddar cheese, onions, mustard

Bean There Done That: house baked beans, onions, mustard

Un-Skinny Love: pepper jack cheese, cheddar cheese, chipotle sour cream

The Story:

We’ve been hearing about Awesome Cone for a few months now. They were hard to find off SE Hawthorne, but now that they’ve moved to D-Street Noshery, you can’t miss them. If you’ve never had a meat cone, you need to visit this cart.

Many tease me because I use the word awesome too much in my daily vernacular. I won’t apologize. Its a great word and Gus thinks so too as that is what he decided to include in the name of his cart. Gus serves up what can only be described as “meat cones” – waffle cones filled with meat or other savory items. I think if someone handed that to me and asked me to name it, I too would choose Awesome Cone. The vegan batter, a Gus original, is squirted onto the hot griddle to start, but before setting up fully, Gus removes it to a heavy duty waffle cone creator he picked up online. That kitchen gadget has the patina of decades past, but works perfectly for what he is creating.

Fungus Cone

The first cone I saw on the menu was the Pig Cone, sweet and tangy pulled pork with a scoop of slaw. Sad though, because the day we visited, they were sold out. Gus seemed to sense my need for pork, so offered up a small version of the pig cone with what little pulled pork he had left. A baby cone I would say. The first bite of the cone was sweet and tricked my mind into thinking of ice cream, but then we got to the pulled pork and all bets were off. Some of the best pulled pork I had tasted and one of the most ingenious vessels. The other cone we enjoyed was the fungus cone, sauteed button mushrooms with a rosemary marsala glaze. The rosemary came out strong, but was sweetened by the marsala. A large cone with enough shrooms to feed two people.

Awesome Cone has a good thing going here with an excellent way to serve hearty, stick to your bones food. Open everyday except Sunday and Monday, Gus is there to deliver one of his signature dishes. Check them out, enjoy a cone and let them know Food Carts Portland sent ya.

Sample Menu:

Oh, Pioneer Cone: wagon wheel pasta in creamy vegan pasta sauce – $5

Fungus Cone: sauteed button mushrooms in a rosemary marsala glaze – $5

Pig Cone: sweet and tangy pulled pork with slaw – $6

Chicken and Dumpling Cone: exactly what it sounds like – $5

The Story:

When I first saw the brightly painted cart with pastel green stripes and pink faux brick, I was intrigued by the name – Euro Trash, wondering what the heck they were going to offer. Since its opening, I have only heard rave reviews about everything on the menu, so had to visit.

I lived in Europe for awhile, yet my culinary experiences were mostly of Germanic and eastern European influences. Charles Thomas, the owner and chef, a longtime north-westerner who did his time working various gigs including restaurants, lived in Spain and Portugal for a period, soaking up the flavors of that region. As with many cart owners, he wanted to open a restaurant, but when he crunched the numbers, it just wasn’t in the cards. Now that he has the cart open, he loves it. The cart life captured his heart.

Fishy Chips from Euro Trash

The menu at Euro Trash is mind boggling to say the least. From the first item – a prawn baguette with Portuguese curry prawns to the chorizo and chips, it was truly difficult to choose just one item. This is one of those carts you want to visit with kind friends so you can all try something different. When asked what I wanted, I spontaneously blurted out the first thing I saw – Fishy Chips. Normally, when you think of fish and chips, you would be offered halibut or whitefish along with some fries. Here at Euro Trash, it’s Spanish anchovies. Yes, anchovies lightly breaded then deep fried and finished with a little lemon and sea salt. I was excited to see anchovies offered since I’m a fan of their strong flavor. The deep frying along with the light outer crust provide a depth of flavor that is truly enjoyable. While it is served with an aioli for dipping, it wasn’t needed in my case as the “chips” stood by themselves. Charles even offered to leave the heads on if you let him know ahead of time – I guess that is how you would normally serve them.

Euro Trash is another great addition to Good Food Here, the pod quickly defining itself as a destination spot for the city’s cart goers in southeast. Just look at the menu offerings and you know they took the time to craft some tasty vittles. Head on down for breakfast, lunch or dinner and let Charles know Food Carts Portland sent ya.
