The Story:
Do you sometimes have a craving for a good wholesome breakfast or a traditional BLT lunch with fries? Well, now you can get that at your local food cart. The Lovin’ Spoonfull opened earlier this summer and will serve up traditional American fare with a smile.
Mellisa and Spring Kennedy are the sisters behind this bright orange cart. They opened earlier this summer and have created a small oasis right on the corner of 2nd and Oak. As you walk up, you see the truck parked behind some well manicured hedges protected by barriers creating a space where you can order and a space where you pick up. Being a truck, they sit higher than normal carts, so you step up to onto the curb and look up to a couple of smiling faces waiting to take your order. The day we visited, Spring was wearing cowboy had with a vintage Miller Beer patch, always a good sign.
The menu at The Lovin’ Spoonfull covers both breakfast and lunch with traditional egg dishes, egg sandwiches and burritos to cold sandwiches and burgers, salads and chili for lunch. A broad menu focusing on simple well prepared dishes at a great price. As I took in the offerings, I saw my latest favorite lunch choice, the tuna melt. I was surprised to see it for $3.95 – a great deal. When I ordered, I was surprised to learn it came with a choice of side – salad, fries, tots or chili. For $3.95, that is a great deal. On the sidewalk in front of the cart is a comfortable sized picnic table and we chose to take advantage of the cooler summer day and eat there. As a result, Mellisa personally delivered our meals to us on ceramic plates. The tuna melt was great with just the right amount of tuna and American cheese so as to not fall apart when you begin eating it. I chose tots as a side which came with their secret sauce, a twist on Russian dressing. Overall, a great meal for a great price.
The Lovin’ Spoonfull has made its mark on their little corner of downtown. While we ate, they enjoyed a constant stream of customers, some already regulars and as a good cart owner, Mellisa and Spring knew their names. Love that! If you work down in that area and are looking or something new, check out The Lovin’ Spoonfull and say hi to Mellisa and Spring. Let them know Food Carts Portland sent ya.

I wish this place were closer! At 2nd/Oak, it’s a bit of a walk for most downtown workers like me. And I have to say, the carts where the employees tower above you makes talking to them a bit awkward (see the Ciao Chow cart as another example).
But I loved it. They had a fast, efficient kitchen. The menu was delicious comfort food, like something you’d get at an old school American diner. My toast came with a choice of honey or jam, a nice thought. And breakfast is served all day, always a rare find.
This place is amazing.
My wife recently brought my kids downtown to meet me for lunch. It happened to be my son’s 5th birthday, and when they found out, they brought out two cupcakes with candles, one for him, one for my daughter. They proceeded to sing Happy Birthday to him with tons of enthusiasm. My son was THRILLED, and still talks about it two weeks later.
That’s a good way to earn my business, folks. I’ll be back, even without the kids.
What is not to love about the Lovin’ Spoonfull? Two beautiful, friendly women serving great food at an incredibly low price.
The tuna melt was perfect. I will definitely be back soon and often.
Lunch truck for sale, the great spot that it is at will be lost this Friday. If you would like a turn key operation with a great location please call 503-702-6172 or email me.
Thank you for looking and more info is on craigslist under lunch truck. Make on offer.
Hi there! My cousin lives in your area and told me about your truck being for sale. I’m in Kansas City, and wondered if you could give me more details.
How many miles are on the truck? Is it gas, electric, or both? I may not be able to come see it, so any other information you could email me would be great. I am looking at hitting the street in the next 6 months.
Any pictures of the inside?
Thanks!
