The Story:
Good Food Here. That is the name of the newest pod in SE Portland hosting food carts. I believe every pod could take on this title in this fine city with all the wonderful carts we have. One addition to the new pod is Dog Eat Dawg, a traditional hot dog cart with a little extra on the menu.
Dog Eat Dawg is the partnership between Van and Dan who recently relocated their cart from Coeur d’Alene ID. While Van and Dan serve up great Chicago style dogs using Nathan’s Kosher all beef wieners, they contribute to the community while they are at it. While in Coeur d’Alene, they partnered with a local animal shelter to profile an available dog as their special Dog of the week. A different special was named and crafted with the dog in mind. They are bringing that community spirit with them by donating $1 to the Oregon Humane Society for each dog of the week special.
Are you a hot dog connoisseur? If so, you may want to visit with Dan as he seems to know his franks. The Chicago Dog I enjoyed started with the Nathan’s 1/4 lb frank topped with tomato wedges, a pickle spear, raw onions, deli mustard, sweet relish, celery salt and topped with a sport pepper. We joked because Dan stated some customers who don’t know what a traditional Chicago dog is sometimes ask for ketchup. I guess that’s sacrilegious for the faithful. While they prepped my dog, a customer ordered a Philly Cheesesteak. My ears perked up when I heard Dan ask if they wanted Whiz. WHIZ! In Philly, cheesesteaks can be ordered with Cheesewhiz as a topping option and I simply love it. I haven’t been able to find it available here in Portland until now.
I am happy to see a neighborhood pod get a great hot dog and sandwich cart like Dog Eat Dawg. Dan and Van will great you with a smile and feed you their best. Try some of the garlic fries if you can. Dan insisted we try some on the house and they were brilliant. Its the batter I guess. Drop on by Good Food Here and say hi to Dog Eat Dawg and let them know Food Carts Portland sent ya.

OK, Imma sound like a b***h here (cause I am one sometimes)…
But a true chicago dog is never done with a Nathan’s dog. Only Vienna beef. It also needs fluorescent relish and a poppy-seed bun. So a little ketchup isn’t going to hurt the authenticity any more.
That said, these do look delicious, and I will likely be hitting this one up this week!
I was,nt going to respond, but since I believe this comment was in good spirit, I will. You are absolutely right about Vienna beef & fluorescent green relish, i’m impressed. I also used to use real Amorosa rolls for my Phillys shipped from Pa. But I did’nt want to charge more than $3 for a 1/4 all beef dog and it’s hard to go wrong with an all beef Kosher Nathans from Coney Island. I also did’nt want to charge more than $5.50 for my Philly which is better than ones I’ve recently paid $9 for. We use a local bakery now without compromising in any way on quality. I could use food coloring in my sweet relish to make it fluorescent green I guess. We use great products and the result has been fantastic! I look forward to meeting you soon and building you a terrific lunch or dinner. I almost scolded a guy for putting ketchup on his Philly the other day too. Van (Dog Eat Dawg).
Now that I know I can get a chicago-style hot dog in Portland by people who know how to make one, I will definitely be stopping by this pod and cart very soon!!
Last week, I ate their Philly Cheesesteak and had an order of fries. The meat was cooked fine and seasoned well, and the fries were good.
Sorry, my comment did come out poorly, and I DID mean it in ‘good’ spirits. I was just unnecessarily pointing out the irony of needing to keep ketchup off, while not using other traditional ingredients.
I’m actually pleased to see you using quality, local ingredients!
That doesn’t look like a sport pepper. Looks like a banana pepper. I’d still eat it – and put ketchup on it. Can’t help myself.
I just re-read my earlier comment and it doesn’t really seem to express my eating experience at Dog eat Dawg.
My Philly and fries were damn good, very tasty, and filling. Dan and Van are two good dudes and they take their responsibility seriously to provide you with a great enjoyable meal.
Go eat there and enjoy your food.
Killer Fries, crisp and tasty. The hotdogs are great too! Most importanly where can you have good food and give to a great charity at the same time with out breaking the bank. It’s a very cool idea. In a time that everyone is hitting you up for money, it sure is nice to do both at once. Nice job guys-We’ll be back.
Dog eat Dawg’s Philly and fries will make your tummy feel happy and comforted all day long. They told me that they use real Angus Beef in the Philly. The fries were different than most places and tasted super yummy. The cart is located in a lot with other carts and there are plenty of tables and trees. It was fun eating there.
Yummy comfort food! Dog eat Dawg’s Philly has real Angus Beef (lots of it) and comes with a good quality tasty roll. Angus Beef kicks other cheaper meats to the curb. I don’t know what type of potato they use for their French Fries or how they cook them; they just tasted how fries should taste. The cart cluster where they are located has many tables to sit down and eat, trees for shade, and good parking.
Had a great pilly cheese steak sandwich and the fries are to die for. Priced to cheap for the quality of food. Great place to eat, the service and people were on top of their game. Totally enjoyed the experience. Thanks so much!

@ Matt & Rick, Dan is using a different name for his hotdog cart at NE 20th/Everett. His cart is a big white truck. Same great food.
