Sunday will be a busy day in north Portland. North Station, one of the newer pods, is celebrating their grand opening with kids activities, live music and food from any one of the 15 carts there. Located on the corner of N Greeley and Killingsworth, the pod offers up tasty vittles from the likes of Brown Chicken Brown Cow, Brother Bob’s Bakery, PDX671, Starchy and Husk, Savvy Js, Saucy’s Ribs, Sila Thai, Yogio, Olympic Hot Dogs, El Rancho, Wicked Waffles, Caraquena, Scoop and the anchor building which houses Pizza Depokos. The event runs from 8am-8pm so you can go before or after the bike ride if you decide you want to do both. Be aware that North Station is inside the route of the Sunday Parkways, so you may want to bring a map so you can park elsewhere and walk over. Or take public transportation. More Info.

Speaking of pods:
Dreamer’s Marketplace on NE MLK between Knott and Graham streets celebrated opening this past weekend with an open air arts and crafts market. They plan on having space for 14 carts, but are trying to incorporate non-food vendors in their plan also. If you are looking for a spot, contact them at DreamersPDX.com.
Since it seems all the pods on the east side have proper names, I think the westsiders are scheming to formalize their place in the scene. The pod at SW 3rd and Ash where Big-Ass Sandwiches and Rick’s Wild Seafood and Flavour Spot 3 are is now named Lot 94. I like it.

Local darlings Pink Martini recently released a video featuring food carts. It is pretty fun to watch and see how a cart is incorporated into a sexy french song. Can you figure out which cart this is?

Crystal Beasley has an idea. She wants to incorporate a food cart into her study of human behavior with games. Her plan is to open PieLab in Pioneer Courthouse Square 4th of July weekend and play games with her customers who come and order pie. What kind of games? Well, what if you ordered chocolate and got vanilla? The next patron may get your chocolate because the previous customer ordered vanilla. Get it? Sounds fun and unique, just what succeeds here in Portland. Crystal needs some additional funds to get her unique project off the ground and has set herself up on KickStarter. Toss in a few bucks if you feel so inclined. More information about the project at KickStarter.

Happy Summer (finally)

Ack! I want a sticker!
nice job on this write-up dieselboi! very informative of the growing sub-culture that is food carts! thanks for all your hard work.
Oh wow, 18 potential food carts on 43rd and Belmont? That makes me so happy, you don’t even understand.
Anybody been to the Pastrami on Rye cart yet? Thoughts?
I’m also assuming that’s S(W) 4th & Hall?
I’m looking forward to the Belmont & 43rd pod, too. That’s even closer to me than Cartopia! This stuff could eventually get dangerous…
I’ve been to Pastrami on Rye at PSU. Had a very tasty reuben on a marble rye there.
Have you guys seen the new pod going in beside the Bearly Worn consignment store at SE 50th & Division? It’s going to be a “full service” pod like the one up on Mississippi. They are currently setting up all the utilities and looking for cart applications. I was actually kinda surprised to find that you all hadn’t mentioned anything yet. Here’s they’re website for info and applications:
