Some items from the foodcart-o-sphere:
Food Carts Portland would like to wish BrunchBox a Happy 1st Birthday. Yes indeed. One year ago today, BrunchBox landed giving Portland a new option for lunchtime burger madness. Head on down to BrunchBox today or this week and congratulate them on their success. BrunchBox is at SW 5th and Stark and is open weekdays from 8am to late afternoon.

Wicked Waffles and The Sugar Cube are opening this week. Wicked Waffles opened on Monday, providing North Portland another option for tasty waffle concoctions. Wicked Waffles is located at the new Refuel North Station at the corner of N Killingsworth and Greeley.
The Sugar Cube is reopening after a winter break and has been teasing us on Twitter with her tasty concoctions. If you have a sweet tooth, you have to visit The Sugar Cube. They are located at Mississippi Marketplace and plan on being open Thurs-Sat, 12-7pm and Sunday, 12-5pm. I know I am going to get me something with chocolate and salt and caramel.

The Big Egg at Mississippi Marketplace has new hours for spring – open at 6:30am, Wednesday through Friday. Now you too can enjoy one of their great breakfast sandwiches on the way to work.

Whiffies and Potato Champion, both of SE 12th and Hawthorne, are expanding their hours this week to include lunchtime. If you’re on the east side, you can now get your late night fix of pies and fries at noon.

Garden State has indeed opened and has been crazy busy at their newest location at Mississippi Marketplace. During the past couple of months, the Sellwood location has been closed. But not for long. Kevin, the owner, Tweeted this weekend that the Sellwood location would reopen by Friday.

News arrived in our inbox this past week that the owner of Thai Basil, located at SW 2nd and Oak, suffered a stroke and is in the hospital. His son says he is recovering, but all cart lovers should keep him in their thoughts and if you can visit the cart and wish the family well.

There is a new cart pod on the west side off TV Highway. The owner of the lot is looking for carts who want to participate. If you are a westsider and want to check it out, here’s the info.

Are you traveling to Bend anytime soon? Maybe skiing or an early spring break? I recently learned that Bend has a food cart named SPORK. If you visit, check out their website for daily specials and let them know you heard about them from Food Carts Portland.

When one cart closes, another opens. That seems to be the story of Portland. Down on SW 5th and Stark, the venerable Gyros King/Taste of Kazakstan/Creperie cart has finally closed and is for sale – call 971 227 4286 for more info. If you’re looking for a cart at a great location, let us know and we’ll go write down the contact info. Don’t fret though. The former side cart location at 5th and Stark now has signage for District Sandwiches and Spuds. Watch for them to open soon.
Happy Carting.

Thanks! I also heard that FlavourSpot is opening up down by Big A** Sandwiches. Maybe you already posted that, though.
I’m pretty happy to hear about the TV Highway setup! Hopefully that will work out well
Hey, I love your site and all the great info I’ve been able to get from it! If you could grab that info off of “Gyros King/Taste of Kazakstan/Creperie cart” for me I would really appreciate it. I’ve been working on putting together a plan for a cart for some time now and this might just be the jump start to get me going. Even if it’s already sold or being taken over I’m I could get some more info from them.
Thanks for the great site!
Yep it’s true….the sweets from the streets are back!! One minor correction is that we are now open W-Sat 12-7, Sun 12-5..we will extend our hours when it warms up.
We have smoothies, shakes, malts and even the quintessential root beer float w/Fifty Licks vanilla bean ice cream.
Did someone say Triple Threat Cookies? They are back w/vengeance…you can even get them as a ice cream sandwich w/drippy salted caramel.
Bruleed passion fruit panna cotta, homemade cherry cherry pie, chocolate brownies w/fleur del sel and grassy green olive oil…warm brownie sundae, Amy Winehouse cupcakes…just come down and see for yourself.
Take it inside Prost and pair it w/a dark German beer. Either way get your sugar freak on!
Love,
The Cube xoxo
So are wiffies and potato champion moving to lunchtime permanently, just for the week or what?
I headed over to Whiffies today and got one of his first lunchtime pies… pot roast, a new flavor, and it was delicious. I’ve heard rumors that a couple of the other carts in that pod might be opening at lunchtime as well.
As someone who works about six blocks from there, it’s great news, except I’m not sure the 12-block walk is going to offset the pies.
Any news on Stella’s on Stark? Is their new cart over on Alder opening soon? I don’t head downtown often these days, I mostly stay here in SE but I’ll be over downtown tomorrow and Friday for a bit around lunchtime. Would be great to find them again! I think I may be experiencing withdrawal symptoms, heh…
please keep us westsiders updated on that cart pod please….
I have updated the post with the phone number for the cart for sale – 971 227 4286
Saw the most impressive cart–the actual cart itself–I’ve ever seen today. At the burgeoning “Area 23″ pod on Alberta, a new cart called Inspire is a salvaged and restored, bright red vintage (I’d guess circa 1910s) train car! Or it might have been a trolley–either way, darned impressive! I was told a lot of the material is original, but with new custom stained glass, great graphic design in the lettering, and truly impressive metal window awnings/grills/art that spell out the name of the cart!
Seen some great custom-built carts lately (Ruby Dragon on Mississippi comes to mind) and great repurposed carts (like the Spud Locker’s totally unique military surplus redo), but this is on another level. Apparently they’ll be serving raw foods, juices, and “amazing vegan cake”. Hope I’m not scooping anybody here, or letting any cats out of bags, but it was just really remarkable work and a great idea.
