Week’s cart specials and some news

Some food cart specials we’re seeing from around the Internets:

Big A** Sandwiches on SW 3rd and Ash has a special of the week: “Buffalo Hot Hole:” fried chicken breast in Frank’s Red Hot with fries and homemade gorgonzola sauce, served cold. $8. Open for lunch daily and late night towards the end of the week.
_______________

Spudlocker on SW 2nd and Stark special of the week: baked potato filled to the brim with black beans and spicy roasted pepper cheese sauce, topped with sour cream and cilantro – $5.
_______________

Rick’s Wild Seafood on SW 3rd and Ash: All you can eat Cod fish and chips $6
_______________

Best of Brazil, a bright yellow food cart on SW 5th is moving in the coming weeks to SW 3rd between Stark and Oak. This is part of the Aybla family of carts. I wonder what will take its place at 5th?
_______________

I heard a rumor that The Limp Noodle may have sold their cart. They were open yesterday, but I understand it will become a waffle cart by month’s end. We’ll keep an eye on that.
_______________

A reader reported that Q BBQ on SW 4th and Hall has a for sale sign on it. That’s too bad. I never did make it to the new location for a BBQ turkey leg. Let’s hope someone pounces on the cart and opens something awesome!
_______________

Valhalla Sandwiches will soon be opening at SW 9th and Alder by Spella. They have moved around a bit, from Hawthorne to SW 4th and Hall and now with a new/old cart to the new location. The cart is in place, but no indication of when they are to open. We’ll keep checking.
_______________

Kevin Sandri of Garden State in SE has a new cart at Mississippi Marketplace. I see it there, but they are still finishing the final touches. Look for it to open in the next couple of weeks.
_______________

Refuel Station North, the new pod being built at N Killingsworth and Greeley is coming along nicely. We visited last week and they have isolated power and water hookups for about 10 or more carts. Looking professional now. There are two carts open – Saucy’s and Brother Bob’s bakery along with the wood fired pizza in the anchor building named Pizza Depokos.  Watch for a March grand opening date.

I’ll be in New York this week unless the giant snow storms prevent me from landing. I want to see what all the hub bub is about their cart scene. With my luck, they will be closed because of the weather. All in all though, I’ll be able to attend VENDRTV’s 1yr Anniversary party. You can follow all the adventures via our Twitter @pdxfoodcarts or on Facebook.

  1. Enjoy New York, I hope you get to check out their carts. I grew up in North Jersey (my introduction to food trucks were the infamous Rutgers University Grease Trucks in New Brunswick in the 1990′s, home of the “Fat” sandwiches), and never really found anything special about NYC’s food carts outside of Sabrett’s, pretzels or lamb-kebabs.

But things have probably changed back there over the past few years, heh. Last time I was out there in December though, I didn’t really see many around. Summers would certainly provide a better comparison, but I’d still put my money on our carts here in Portland.

Yeah New Jersey and grease trucks! woot!

The only thing I miss about NY street food are the fried knishes.

  3. How could I forget knish! You’re right, I’ve even decided to take to making them myself since I can’t find any decent ones around here.

Hmmm, I wonder how a comfort food-centric knish cart would fare? Knish, fresh baked bagels and rye, latke, egg cream, pastrami, corned beef…

Thanks for the update on the Q BBW cart. It’s been driving me crazy that they haven’t re-opened since right before the holidays. I’m grateful that I had a chance to have their delicious food twice. They will be missed as their time on 4th and Hall was just way too short. Good luck to the new people that buy the cart! Indeed, let’s hope for something awesome and that they stay in the same pod!
