The LA Times visited Portland this past fall and enjoyed some of our wonderful food carts. Highlighted are some of the newer carts like Whiffies, Potato Champion and Nong’s, but Spella and Ziba’s Pitas were also profiled. For all of you first time visitors, welcome, and know that Portland would love to have you visit and enjoy our wonderful carts.
LA Times – Portland’s food carts a winning stop
_______________
Garden State, a wonderful cart in SE Portland was profiled on Saturday on Good Morning America as one of the top 4 food carts in the nation. Way to go Garden State! Unfortunately, Garden State did not win the best street food award, but Portland knows who’s truly the best, don’t we?

Two new carts on SW 4th and Hall: one BBQ joint and the other seems to be a sandwich cart..
Kudos to Garden State for getting national attention.
That said, of course it didn’t win. It’s far, far, FAR from the best food cart Portland has to offer. I mean, it’s not even close. If I had to make a shortlist of the places I’d nominate, Garden State wouldn’t be anywhere near it. Portland had a chance to show its stuff, and we blew it by championing Garden State instead of something truly great, like Nong’s Khao Man Gai. Sad.
Adam,
One thing to point out was that this was a national competition run by Good Morning America based on what viewers put in as essays on their favorite cart. Portland could have organized a concerted effort to “essay” up a specific cart, but I don’t trust the network that much. I’m glad Garden State represented Portland so well. Shows NYC that the west coast can bring it. It has been broughten!
Thanks Adam for going so far, far, FAR out of your way to make your point. Just keep sticking to your favorites. The only sad part is the people who take it all too seriously.
The vote was simply a matter of twitter/facebook followers, and we were out-geeked by the Seattle crew. I mean, 3 of the anchors wouldn’t even touch the winner’s entry; it wasn’t up to them. During the day the winners were somehow able to tweet vote tallies, and when we still led in the early afternoon, they told everyone how to vote again. It was 2000 and 2004 all over again. That’s cool that we lost, I feel like I can do so much more as the runner-up, and avoid the backlash from being the champ. Oh wait, the backlash is here…
oh, snap.
