Taqueria El Canario

Location: SW 4th and Ankeny

Description:

It is 11pm, you’ve already watched a band at Dante’s or Berbati’s and you are getting hungry. You’ve had a few too many of the wonderful Voodoo donuts over time and need some protein. Where do you go? Not far. Just a hop skip and a jump from the clubs is Taqueria El Canario, a late night taqueria that will sate your appetite, allowing you to watch the next band with a full stomach.

Taqueria El Canario offers up the traditional Mexican fare you would expect from a cart – tacos, burritos, quesadillas and tostadas. You can order your tacos with pastor, asada, carnitas, carne molida (ground beef), carne desebrada (shredded beef), chicken, machaka (shredded beef with egg), lengua (tongue), veggie or fish. Such a large assortment, when you are out late, you may be tempted to order one of each. And tacos are only $1.50.

I ordered my favorite – carnitas and asada. Both were well put together and they even had a little cheese sprinkled on top. The hot sauce and salsa they offered was perfectly spicy for what I wanted that night.

Late night food is something I wish I knew about when I was younger. I love that the food carts of Portland have embraced after hours and give us all something different to enjoy after both a long day and a long night. Check out Taqueria El Canario when you are down by the clubs one weekend night and tell them Food Carts Portland sent ya.

Sample Menu:

  • Burritos with your choice of meat – comes with rice and beans, pico de gallo, guacamole and cheese – $4

The hottest thing I’ve ever put in my mouth was from this cart. If you want fire, they’ll do it!
