I tried the cod fish and chips, the fish was good. The slaw was just okay. The fries were sadly disappointing: soggy, mushy, slightly greasy and overcooked, and very bland. I added salt and pepper just to make them edible. Judging from the reviews so far they seem to go back and forth between this description and a better version... maybe cooking up too large batches and then reheating too long? I am glad to see a fish and chip cart around as the fish and chip options are sadly lacking around here, and will probably try this again for the fish. It would also have been nice to have third piece of fish at the expense of some of the slaw.

Went there on Saturday. The fish was very fresh and cooked perfectly. I found the fries to be greasy, soggy, and bland. The person working was friendly and efficient. I look foward to trying different items besides the fish and chips. Also, they sell fresh fish at a very affordable price.

Tried it yesterday. Had cod fish tacos. The tacos were 90% slaw with very little fish. Unlikely to be back.

[...] “Funny thing – when I was chatting with John about his 30 carts in 30 days, we discussed the need for some more good fish and chips in this town. Well, now we have it. Rick’s fish and chips come in either red snapper, cod or halibut. I believe cod is the tradition, yet when I asked for a recommendation, Ben suggested the red snapper and I’m glad he did. It was excellent. Ben batters both the fish and the fries with a coating of spices. I would lean towards lightly breaded. It wasn’t one of those heavy on the coating type of scenarios. The fish and chips are served with a little chunky slaw and your choice of sauce.” – Food Carts Portland [...]

The prices have gone up $.50, at least on the items like sandwiches and fish & chips. This seems to be de rigueur for new carts, though, as they try to differentiate based on price to gain a following, then increase to improve (or recover) a margin. Or maybe they're initially bad at pricing.

I ordered the red snapper sandwich. The portion size for the fish was on the niggardly side. There was a single, breaded fillet in the sesame bun, leaving half of the sandwich as spongy wings with cole slaw. Picture an isosceles triangle of fish, about 3/4" thick, that occupies 1/2 the total surface area of a Franz hamburger bun, and you'll have an accurate image. It was definitely not what I expected for $6, but I didn't discover this until I'd walked the 8 blocks back to my office. This seems to have been a problem for other reviewers; there were no others in line when I ordered, so I have a hard time believing it was a simple error.

However, the food was fairly good. The fries are like thicker versions of those found at McMenamins, but are seasoned nicely and do not come across as greasy. What little there was of the fish had a light batter with a well-balanced seasoning, and the flesh was flaky and moist.

Overall, the food was good but in terms of price/performance, it was lacking. I'll probably give their fish & chips a shot in a couple of weeks, but will plan to eat at one of the tables, in case there are similar issues with that order. Six dollars for a handful of fries and a smallish wedge of snapper is unreasonable.

Please update the prices. They have gone up.

I had snapper fish tacos the other day. And although they were quite good, I felt they were on the wimpy side. I'm not a huge eater, but I was left not-quite-satisfied with the portion size.

Hope you can work that out!

wow! I devoured my order of cod & chips & slaw last week when I ate here. Things I appreciated: clean, sharp-looking cart; fish wasn't over-battered; fish tasted good not funky; tasty fries; vinegar for said fries; not-too-much-mayo-slaw.

I will definitely go back here - reasonable prices for the quality plus several other options that sound great (tacos, etc). I spent my early childhood years in NZ where fish & chip shops are standard for every neighborhood, so eating fish & chips outside just feels like summer to me.
