Seriously. Willamette Week, with a little bit of help from yours truly, are putting on a party to celebrate Portland food carts. But it’s more than that – 100% of the proceeds benefit Mercy Corps NW and Hacienda CDC.
What’s the food cart connection? Did you know Mercy Corps has given loans to over 5 Portland food carts and provides economic development assistance for small emerging businesses? Did you know Hacienda CDC has an economic development program to help teach budding entrepreneurs skills through their Micro Mercantes Tamale Vendors program ? Yep. Ever had the awesome tamales at the Hollywood Farmers Market? That’s a Hacienda CDC booth. Anyway, as you know, I love Portland food carts and these are two organizations I really believe in, so it just seems like a natural fit.
But the fun part is this: A mere $5.00 gets you samples from Altengartz Bratwurst, Asian Station Cafe, Biggs Bros Wings, Hacienda CDC (homemade Tamales), India Chaat House, Junior Ambassador, Julia’s Mobile Cafe (Russian Food), Moxie RX, NW Hotdogs (Mercy Corps vendor), Tabor (czech food), Tita’s Pista (Phillipino food)! $1 Beers courtesy of BridgePort Brewing Company, Free Vitamin Water AND there will be music by Jack Straw.
Good food. Cheap Beer. Blue Grass Music. 100% of proceeds benefit Mercy Corps NW and Hacienda CDC.

I’ll see you there.
BTW: Have you tried the Belgian Fries place next to Biggs Bros on Hawthorne? Finally, a place close to my apartment that’s open past 10 (3am on weekends? awesome.)
It shows promise — my first batch of fries tasted great, but could have been a bit crisper. Will definitely ask for xtra crispy next time. Remoulade was good too.
I’ve been waiting for this place to open. Will need to check it out.
Hey CBF – Nice job on pulling this off! Since I can’t be there, would it be too much to ask for a full report?
Thanks! (psst, honestly, Willamette Week is doing most of the work). But still, yes, I will give a full report of the event.

wish I was going! I saw the sign at India Chaat House this past week and the owner talking to a woman about set up (maybe you?).

Kudos to Altengartz bratwurst for serving until the end. Not only did they continue to serve but they offered service with a smile. Something some of the other vendors should learn to do…..deal with the pressure of a waiting crowd with grace. The Altengartz couple worked well as a team; husband was busy at the grill while the wife spoke to EVERY person who was waiting. She told the story about their bratwurst, told us where it was made, (LOCAL!) and their locations and hours. She made waiting in line a pleasure.
Oh, one more thing to note…..we were told that there would be an award for best cart, the Carty award? We asked how we could put our vote in and the co-ordinators reply, ” Yeah, we decided to pitch the award. Maybe next year we’ll be more organized.”
Hmm, well, that was kind of a let-down for us but imagine the disappointment for the vendors; many of which asked us to, “Vote for us for the best cart!”
Our vote goes to the sausage people. You stuck with the time obligation when you could have packed it up like the other vendors did AND you offered a great, local product.
Thanks for staying and serving!
